Rooted in Strength
A personal reflection on faith, resilience, and rising.
By Cherriell Orius
Rooted does not mean still. It means held.
Rooted in Strength · By Cherriell Orius
Cherriell Orius, known as The Phoenix Noir, is a transformational speaker, author, and women's empowerment advocate whose mission is to help women heal from trauma, reclaim their God-given identity, and walk boldly in their purpose. Drawing from her own experiences of overcoming adversity, profound loss, and personal transformation, Cherriell has dedicated her life to empowering women to rise above life's challenges through faith, resilience, and intentional living. Her message reminds women that they are uniquely created by God, equipped with extraordinary purpose, and capable of creating lasting impact in their families, communities, and the world.
“She is uniquely created, equipped, and capable of impact.”
The work begins with remembering who you are.
When people ask what brought me to this work, the truth is that I have always been doing it.
Even as an adolescent, I found that women and girls who had experienced pain, trauma, and hardship were naturally drawn to me. As a young woman navigating my own trauma, I didn't recognize it as a calling at the time. I simply believed we were kindred spirits. If I could listen, encourage, or help in some way, I did.
What I now understand is that God was preparing me long before I knew there was a purpose attached to my experiences.
“I have always been doing it.”
Sometimes the calling arrives before the language.
The defining turning point came at the age of 42. I found myself trying to navigate a toxic relationship while simultaneously experiencing profound loss. Within a short period of time, I lost my mother after her ten-year battle with cancer, my maternal grandmother after a private struggle with cancer, my best friend, and then my father unexpectedly due to ruptured blood vessels in his brain.
Those losses shattered the life I knew and ignited what I can only describe as a rebirth.
For the first time, I was forced to confront the reality of how fragile and fleeting life truly is. I began asking myself difficult but necessary questions: Was I truly living life, or was life simply happening to me? Was I thriving, or merely surviving?
I knew I wanted more than existence. I wanted purpose. I wanted intention. I wanted transformation.
“I knew I wanted more than existence.”
Purpose · intention · transformation
The ashes held a beginning.

That journey led me to reintroduce myself to the world as The Phoenix Noir, a symbol of rising from the ashes of pain, loss, and adversity. As I pursued a deeper understanding of purpose and intentional living, I began studying trauma and its effects.
I discovered how unresolved trauma can delay dreams, distort identity, interrupt purpose, and keep people trapped in survival mode. But I also discovered something even greater: healing is possible, and our past does not have to determine our future.
Your past can be part of the story without being the ending.
My mission is to help women understand that they were designed to rise.
I want readers to know that when they ground themselves in God and embrace the identity He has given them, nothing is impossible. Trauma may shape part of their story, but it does not get to write the ending.
Every woman deserves to know that she is a reflection of God's heart, created with divine intention and immeasurable worth. Her purpose is powerful. Her voice matters. Her impact is significant.
“When a woman understands who she is, whose she is, and what she carries within her…”
Purpose is powerful. Voice matters. Impact is significant.

When a woman understands who she is, whose she is, and what she carries within her, she becomes unstoppable.
An empowered woman doesn't just transform her own life; she helps transform the world around her.
Because we were not created merely to survive. We were created to rise.

Rise with what is true.

Trauma is a word that has become increasingly common in everyday conversation. People use it to describe everything from a painful breakup to a difficult day at work. While greater awareness of mental health is a positive step, the widespread use of the term has also created confusion about what trauma actually is and how it affects people.
Understanding trauma matters because it shapes the way we respond to ourselves and others. When we recognize the difference between everyday stress and trauma, we can better support healing and resilience.
Trauma is an emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical response to an event or series of events that overwhelms a person's ability to cope. Trauma is not defined solely by what happened, but by how the experience affected the individual.
Trauma can be deeply personal.
Naming the thing can make room for care.
Events that can lead to trauma include:
Importantly, two people can experience the same event and respond differently. One person may recover with few lasting effects, while another may experience significant emotional distress. Trauma is deeply personal.
Mental health professionals often describe trauma as an experience that leaves a person feeling helpless, unsafe, powerless, or intensely threatened.
One of the biggest misconceptions about trauma is that it simply means something unpleasant or upsetting.
This does not mean these experiences are unimportant. Difficult situations can still cause sadness, frustration, or distress. However, not all hardship is traumatic.
Similarly, trauma is not a sign of weakness. A person's traumatic response reflects how the nervous system reacts to overwhelming circumstances, not a failure of character or resilience.
“A response is not a failure of character.”
Your body was trying to keep you here.
Trauma can leave a lasting imprint on both the brain and body. When a person experiences a threatening event, the body's survival system activates the familiar “fight, flight, or freeze” response.
For some individuals, that alarm system remains activated long after the danger has passed. This can affect concentration, sleep, emotions, relationships, and physical health.
People who have experienced trauma may struggle with feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, numbness, shame, and guilt. These reactions are often attempts by the mind and body to protect themselves from future harm. Signs may include constant anxiety or feeling on edge, sudden mood swings, being easily startled, emotional overwhelm, persistent sadness, guilt or shame, and feeling detached from others.
Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, intrusive thoughts about the event, confusion or mental fog, and negative beliefs about oneself or the world may appear. Someone may begin thinking, “I'm not safe,” “I can't trust anyone,” or “Something bad is going to happen.”
Sleep disturbances, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, increased heart rate, and frequent illness due to chronic stress can occur. The body may continue reacting as though danger is present even when no threat exists.
Avoiding certain places, people, or situations; withdrawing from social activities; increased irritability or anger; risk-taking behaviors; substance misuse; and difficulty maintaining relationships are possible. Avoidance is especially common because reminders of the traumatic experience can trigger distressing emotions.
Children often express trauma differently from adults. Signs may include increased clinginess, regressive behaviors such as bed-wetting, frequent nightmares, emotional outbursts, difficulty concentrating in school, and withdrawal from friends and family. Adults sometimes mistake these behaviors for misbehavior when they may be signs of emotional distress.
Although trauma can have profound effects, recovery is possible. Healing does not mean forgetting what happened. Instead, it involves integrating the experience into one's life story without allowing it to dominate daily functioning.
Helpful approaches may include professional therapy, support groups, strong social connections, mindfulness and relaxation techniques, regular exercise, healthy sleep habits, self-compassion, and patience. Many people find that seeking help is one of the most important steps toward recovery.
Trauma is more than a difficult experience. It is a response to events that overwhelm a person's sense of safety, control, or ability to cope. Understanding what trauma is and what it is not helps reduce misunderstanding and stigma while encouraging meaningful support for those who are struggling.
By learning to recognize the emotional, physical, cognitive, and behavioral signs of trauma, we become better equipped to care for ourselves and others. Most importantly, we remember that trauma may change a person's life, but it does not have to define it.

You are more than what happened.
Beauty as self-returnA few quiet minutes, a warm towel, and a ritual that asks nothing of you but presence.
Mix 1 teaspoon plain unsweetened yogurt, 1 teaspoon honey, and a small pinch of turmeric. Yogurt can provide gentle exfoliation, honey helps the mask feel moisturizing, and turmeric gives the ritual its bright golden character.
Patch test first. Avoid the eyes and broken or irritated skin. Leave on for about 10 minutes, rinse gently, and moisturize. Turmeric may stain, and any ingredient can irritate or trigger an allergy. Stop if burning, swelling, itching, or a rash occurs.
Yogurt's creamy texture helps lock in moisture, making it an excellent hydrating agent for dry skin. Studies have shown that yogurt can reduce water loss from the skin, enhancing its moisture balance.
The lactic acid in yogurt inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production. This may help brighten the skin and improve overall skin tone.
Yogurt may support increased skin elasticity, which tends to decrease with age due to collagen loss. This may help maintain a youthful appearance and reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.
The probiotics in yogurt may help balance the skin's microbiome, reducing harmful bacteria and inflammation, which may lead to fewer breakouts.
The lactic acid in yogurt acts as a mild exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells without causing irritation. This may promote a smoother and more radiant complexion.
Yogurt may help calm irritated skin and reduce redness. Anyone with rosacea, eczema, or sensitive skin should consult a qualified healthcare professional before using a DIY mask.
Some studies suggest that yogurt may help create a barrier against UV rays, potentially reducing the risk of sun damage and age spots. This is not a substitute for sunscreen or other sun-protection measures.
The antioxidant properties of yogurt may help fight free radicals, which are associated with premature aging.
Turmeric may brighten the skin, calm redness, and help with mild acne thanks to curcumin's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Honey is a natural, multifunctional skincare ingredient that hydrates, heals, and protects the skin while promoting a radiant complexion.
Honey acts as a natural humectant, drawing moisture from the air into the skin and helping retain it, which keeps the skin soft, plump, and well-hydrated. Its natural sugars form a thin moisture-retaining layer on the skin, similar to glycerin or hyaluronic acid, making it especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin.
Honey contains antibacterial compounds, including hydrogen peroxide and bee defensin-1, which may help fight acne-causing bacteria and prevent infections. Regular use may reduce breakouts, unclog pores, and support a clearer complexion, but results vary and honey is not a substitute for acne treatment from a qualified professional.
Honey's anti-inflammatory properties may help calm redness, irritation, and sensitive skin. It may soothe conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and general skin inflammation, but it should not replace medical care.
Medical-grade honey has been used in wound care to support tissue repair, form a protective barrier, and reduce inflammation and pain. Cosmetic kitchen honey should never be applied to open wounds, and honey's effect on acne scars or overall skin tone is not guaranteed.
Honey contains mild enzymes that may gently exfoliate dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath. This enzymatic action may improve skin texture and enhance natural radiance.
Some studies suggest honey may help prevent premature aging by protecting against oxidative stress and supporting collagen maintenance. Its antioxidants may help combat free radicals, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Patch test first; avoid the eyes, broken skin, and irritated skin. Turmeric may stain. Stop if burning, swelling, itching, or a rash occurs. Consult a qualified dermatologist or healthcare professional for persistent skin concerns, allergies, pregnancy-related questions, or medical conditions.

Financial literacy is often portrayed as a complex subject filled with investment jargon, budgeting formulas, and wealth-building strategies. In reality, the journey to financial stability begins with something much simpler: understanding where your money goes and making small, consistent improvements. Moving from a financial deficit to a surplus is not about perfection or overnight transformation. It is about taking practical steps that gradually improve your financial position and build confidence along the way.

One baby step at a time.
Financial Literacy: From Deficit to Surplus, One Baby Step at a Time
A financial deficit occurs when expenses consistently exceed income, leaving little room for savings or unexpected costs. A surplus, on the other hand, means having money left over after covering necessities. Achieving a surplus is one of the most important milestones in personal finance because it creates opportunities to save, reduce debt, and invest in future goals.
The good news is that reaching a surplus doesn't require a dramatic lifestyle change. It often starts with a series of manageable actions that build momentum over time.
“Manageable actions build momentum over time.”
Achieving a surplus is one of the most important milestones in personal finance.
The first step toward financial literacy is developing a clear understanding of your financial reality. Many people avoid looking closely at their finances because they fear what they might find. However, financial awareness is not about self-judgment; it is about gaining control.
Start by listing all sources of monthly income and all essential expenses such as housing, utilities, transportation, food, and insurance. Next, track every dollar spent for 30 days. This exercise provides valuable insight into spending habits and highlights areas that may need attention.
The goal is not to criticize past decisions but to create a clear picture of what is actually happening. When you know where your money is going, you can make informed decisions about where it should go instead.
Financial awareness is not about self-judgment; it is about gaining control.
Face the Numbers Without Shame
Once you understand your spending patterns, focus on safeguarding the essentials. Financial literacy teaches that necessities should always take priority over discretionary expenses.
Look for one small spending leak that can be reduced or eliminated. This might be an unused subscription, frequent impulse purchases, or regularly buying items that could be prepared at home for less. The purpose is not to deprive yourself but to create breathing room in your budget.
At the same time, begin building a starter emergency fund. Even a modest emergency cushion can make a significant difference. A small reserve helps prevent unexpected expenses from turning into financial crises and reduces the need to rely on high-interest debt.
Remember, an emergency fund does not need to start large. The important thing is to start.
The important thing is to start.
Debt can be one of the biggest obstacles to financial progress, particularly when interest rates are high. However, financial literacy encourages sustainable solutions rather than extreme measures.
Begin by identifying all debts and prioritizing those with the highest costs. Create a repayment strategy that fits comfortably within your budget so that it can be maintained over the long term. A plan that works consistently is far more effective than an aggressive plan that becomes impossible to sustain.
At the same time, look for a manageable way to increase income. This could involve taking on occasional freelance work, selling unused items, improving professional skills, or pursuing additional responsibilities at work. Rather than attempting a complete financial overhaul, focus on one realistic opportunity to generate extra income.
Small improvements in both debt reduction and income growth can produce meaningful results over time.
A plan that works consistently is far more effective than an aggressive plan that becomes impossible to sustain.
Small improvements in both debt reduction and income growth can produce meaningful results over time.
One of the most powerful principles of financial literacy is making good financial habits automatic. Automation removes the need for constant decision-making and helps ensure that financial goals remain a priority.
Set up an automatic transfer to savings, even if the amount is small. Consistent contributions build momentum and reinforce positive financial behavior. Over time, these seemingly minor deposits accumulate into meaningful savings.
In addition, schedule a monthly financial review. Use this time to evaluate spending, monitor debt repayment progress, assess savings growth, and identify areas for improvement.
Perhaps most importantly, celebrate consistency. Financial success is not measured by occasional perfect months but by the ability to maintain healthy habits over time.
Celebrate consistency.
Many people underestimate the impact of small financial actions. Yet financial literacy is fundamentally about developing habits that compound over time. A few dollars saved each week, one debt payment made consistently, or a single spending adjustment can have substantial long-term effects.
The journey from deficit to surplus rarely happens through one major event. Instead, it is built through dozens of small decisions repeated month after month.
Financial literacy is not about becoming wealthy overnight or mastering complicated financial concepts. It is about understanding your finances, making informed choices, and taking practical steps that move you forward. By facing the numbers without shame, protecting essentials, creating a realistic debt plan, and automating positive financial habits, anyone can begin the transition from deficit to surplus.
Most importantly, remember that surplus does not mean perfection. It simply means having money left after meeting your essential needs. Every small step toward that goal matters, and every step brings you closer to long-term financial security and peace of mind.
Conclusion
In a world filled with diet trends, conflicting nutrition advice, and pressure to eat "perfectly," the concept of clean eating can sometimes feel overwhelming. But healthy eating does not have to be strict, stressful, or all-or-nothing. A kinder approach focuses on adding more whole and minimally processed foods to your meals while making room for flexibility, enjoyment, and real life.
Clean eating is not about labeling foods as "good" or "bad." It is about choosing foods that nourish your body more often, while recognizing that no single meal determines your health. The goal is progress, not perfection.
A kinder approach leaves room for real life.
There is no prize for making food harder.

At its core, clean eating means emphasizing foods that are close to their natural state. These foods typically provide essential nutrients, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and lasting energy. Rather than focusing on restriction, a balanced approach encourages adding nourishing foods to your plate and building meals that leave you feeling satisfied.
Clean eating can look different for everyone. Cultural traditions, personal preferences, budgets, dietary needs, and lifestyles all influence what healthy eating looks like in practice.
Build a plate that supports you.
One of the simplest ways to approach clean eating is to include a combination of protein, fiber-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and colorful fruits or vegetables in your meals.
A hearty breakfast can provide sustained energy and help reduce the temptation to rely on convenience foods later in the day.
Try:
These options offer a combination of complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and micronutrients that support satiety and energy.
A nourishing start can be simple.
Start where nourishment feels possible.
Vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains are nutritional powerhouses. They provide fiber, which supports digestive health and can help you feel full and satisfied.
Simple meal ideas include:
These foods are often affordable, versatile, and adaptable to different culinary traditions.
Let plants meet you where you are.
There is more than one way to build a nourishing plate.
Protein helps maintain muscle, supports recovery, and contributes to feelings of fullness. Clean eating does not require a specific type of protein. Both animal-based and plant-based options can be part of a healthy pattern.
Examples include:
The best choice is often the one that aligns with your preferences, cultural background, and nutritional needs.
Let nourishment be inclusive.
Snacks can be an opportunity to add nutrition rather than simply fill a hunger gap.
A simple option:
This combination provides protein, beneficial nutrients, and natural sweetness without requiring complicated preparation.
Healthy eating includes healthy drinking habits. Many people underestimate the impact of hydration on energy levels, concentration, and overall well-being.
Good choices include:
Staying hydrated throughout the day supports overall health and can help you better recognize true hunger and fullness cues.
Hydration is part of the care, too.
Small care adds up.
One of the biggest misconceptions about clean eating is that it requires rigid rules. In reality, sustainable nutrition leaves space for enjoyment and flexibility.
A balanced lifestyle can include:
Healthy eating is not measured by whether every meal is "perfect." It is measured by patterns over time. A nutritious diet should fit your life, not dominate it.
Food is more than fuel. It is part of culture, connection, comfort, and enjoyment. Meals that are satisfying tend to be more sustainable than meals built around restriction.
When planning meals, consider:
The most effective healthy eating pattern is often the one you can consistently enjoy.
A nutritious diet should fit your life, not dominate it.
Satisfaction is part of nourishment.
Clean eating becomes much easier when viewed as a practice of addition rather than restriction. Instead of focusing on what to eliminate, ask:
Small improvements repeated consistently often have a greater impact than short-lived perfection.
Clean eating, when approached with kindness, is not about strict rules, guilt, or achieving nutritional perfection. It is about building meals around whole and minimally processed foods, staying hydrated, including foods you enjoy, and creating habits that support long-term health.
Small improvements repeated consistently often have a greater impact than short-lived perfection.
Care for yourself consistently.
Whether it is a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and nuts, eggs with greens and whole-grain toast, beans and brown rice with roasted vegetables, or grilled fish or tofu with sweet potato and salad, each nourishing choice contributes to a healthier pattern. The goal is not to eat perfectly every day but to care for yourself consistently, compassionately, and sustainably.
Care for yourself consistently, compassionately, and sustainably.
Nourish yourself with kindness.
Important Note: If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or have a history of disordered eating, consult a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making significant dietary changes.
Kindness belongs in every choice.

Fashion as a Gentle Return to Self
There are seasons in life when simply getting dressed can feel like an act of courage.
After hardship, we often expect transformation to arrive with fanfare. We imagine dramatic reinventions, sweeping life changes, or a sudden return to the person we once were. More often, healing arrives quietly. It appears in small decisions made day after day. It lives in routines. In rituals. In the simple act of choosing what to wear when facing the morning.
Fashion as a Gentle Return to Self
Fashion is rarely just about clothing. At its best, it is a language. It speaks to who we are, how we feel, and sometimes, who we hope to become.
As Coco Chanel famously observed, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
Her words remind us that style is not merely about garments. It is about how we move through the world and express our inner lives.
Fashion is rarely just about clothing.
When life has been difficult, there is no prize for forcing yourself into discomfort. The most powerful style choice may be the gentlest one. Choose softness when your spirit feels tender. Reach for fabrics that soothe rather than restrict. Let comfort be enough. There is wisdom in listening to what your body needs instead of demanding that it perform.
The same is true of color. Some days call for quiet neutrals. Other days, a bright cobalt blue, hopeful coral, or joyful marigold feels like a small declaration of life returning. Color has a way of bypassing logic and speaking directly to emotion.
If a particular shade makes you stand taller, smile longer, or feel more present, that is reason enough to wear it.
Let comfort be enough.
These shades create a sense of stability and calm, especially during periods of transition.
A palette that evokes fresh starts, optimism, and renewed energy.
Color Palettes for Healing
Ideal for days when you need a reminder of your resilience and strength.
Colors that feel nurturing, light, and emotionally restorative.
Color Palettes for Healing
Perhaps the most liberating shift comes when we stop dressing for an imagined version of ourselves. Too many closets are filled with clothing kept for a future weight, a past body, or someone else's expectations. Tailoring, on the other hand, honors reality. It supports the body you have today. It respects where you are instead of where you think you should be.
Yves Saint Laurent understood this relationship between clothing and confidence: "I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them confidence."
True style is not punishment. It is partnership.
Tailoring, on the other hand, honors reality.
She deserves clothes that move with her life. Pieces that reflect her values, her confidence, her resilience. Not trends that expire with the season. Not pressure from social media. Not permission from strangers.
A wardrobe rooted in becoming is also one rooted in intention.
Dressing Sustainably While You Heal
Buy less, choose better.
Repair rather than replace.
Fashion becomes transformative when it stops asking, How should I look? and starts asking, How do I want to feel?
Strong. Peaceful. Curious. Creative. Grounded. Hopeful.
The answers may change from one chapter to the next, and your wardrobe can change with them.
There is something deeply empowering about standing in front of your closet and choosing yourself. Not the version shaped by comparison. Not the version carrying old expectations. The version emerging now, shaped by experience, wisdom, and growth.
How do I want to feel?
As Yves Saint Laurent famously said, "Fashions fade, style is eternal."
Because becoming is not a destination. It is an ongoing process.
Because becoming is not a destination.
And sometimes, the most beautiful way to honor that journey is to wear it.
